etymologica: I don’t need to tell an audience of Twitter users how important—and useful—boundaries are to creativity. David Cole points out the flipside: that boundaries are just as important to consuming as to creating. (via lonelysandwich)

I don’t remember when or where I came across it, but I read an article many months ago about a play that was being staged in a hotel elevator. I don’t remember the specifics; I think the audience traveled up and down the elevator with the performers. I think it was some sort of statement about voyeurism. I was reminded of the play’s unique stage when I stepped into the elevator...

Another Schiphol mystery solved! I noticed that the urinals at Schiphol and at JFK had flies drawn into them. This NPR article explains why. The fake flies are an attempt to reduce spillage by taking advantage of the fact that men like to aim at something when they pee. This is what I suspected they were for and I’m thoroughly pleased to find that this is the case. It’s brilliant...

I don’t understand the purpose of these doors at Schiphol Airport, in Amsterdam. Right next to the gates is this large, open space, rendering them useless. My theory is that they are meant to be a memory aid - a physical marker that helps orient travelers, or which differentiates one zone of the airport from another. Or maybe a clever way of masking structural support? All three?

We had an MLK Day of  Service today and I and a few friends helped out at New Haven Reads. My job was to select books and package them in boxes that would then be sent to homeless shelters, retirement homes and prisons. The work was an interesting experiment in our biases. There were some books I selected because I found them personally interesting, and there were some that I would never read,...

My a cappella group is gearing up for our biggest on-campus performance of the semester, and we have to submit two possible songs we want to solo on. Help! These are the the options (“boy songs” only): Bohemian Like You (The Dandy Warhols) Fix You (Coldplay) The Freshmen (The Verve Pipe) Happier (Guster) Love Begins *original arrangement* Never There (Cake) Over My Head (The Fray) Ring...

faucet: Scenarios involving the heat-sucking heater continue to flood my mind.  What I’m basically talking about is some device that slows molecules down in one location, and transfers this mechanical force to molecules in another location.  What if that were possible? Aside: I recall a young/teen novel wherein the protagonist had a ring or something, and he could create things and change...

Protip: when you’re unable to switch your phone on for two days, it might be useful to make sure that you have been pressing the ON button. NOT the button ACROSS from the “on” button. This other button - the WRONG button, which is NOT the “on” button - might be the reason why you’ve been unable to turn your phone on for two days.

I’ve been trying to contact the people at KLM Baggage Claims with no success. The phone rings but noone picks up. The number’s voice mail is full. Tried calling KLM Customer Care but they apparently don’t work on Saturday or Sunday. The street address I gave them was wrong, and the system won’t let me edit my address online.  Frustration.

Writing under attack: the rise of the imagination...
brokenbottleboy: Reading this month’s excellent issue of Wired (full disclosure: I write for them and love writing for them), I stumbled across the interesting new buzz word: vook. In the world of publishing, vooks are the coming thing – books that incorporate video clips within the narrative. Big publishers are already investigating vooks and with the speculation around the Apple Tablet and...

Home! My flight was rerouted and my luggage didn’t make it onto my plane. I hope it comes tomorrow. I’m equal parts excited and exhausted. I want to see everyone but there’s a part of me that wants to curl up in a dark hole and scream. I am DONE with airports for a while. Also, aeroplanes, trains, itineraries and the vaguely hallucinatory sense of rootlessness you get from going...

I’m waiting for my connecting flight to JFK at Schiphol airport, and right in front of me is a place for smokers. It’s this tiny room crowded with people desperate for a nicotine fix. Simultaneously funny and mildly disturbing. Also, back in the states in 6-8 hours. Woot!

allofher: MY PLAYGROUND BY KASPERWORKS A documentary film by Kasper Astrup Schroder about movement in urban space The phrase “parkour park” seems like an oxymoron. My limited understanding of parkour is that it involves re-imagining places; taking walls, roofs and rails and using them in ways they weren’t intended to be used. A dedicated parkour park denies this aspect of...

Jake
Jake discovers a cache of emails from 1999 and, this is the bad part, opens them. The resulting implosion leaves him a much smaller creature: crab-legged and huddling, trying to keep his eyes on four pairs of scuffed shoes. He has become the new god of chagrin. The problem with godhood, of course, is that people will inevitably make sacrifices along the lines of your patronage. Jake scuttles for...

faucet: First assignment for Exile Studio! After watching Down By Law (starring Tom Waits and Roberto Benigni) Prof V.S. asked us “what we thought this class was about.”  One person mumbled something about exiles, then the one girl who always references Foucault referenced Foucault. Then, he gave us our first assignment, “design a font using your tongue.”  Process documentation and end product...

Is there anything notable about the Burj Dubai other than it’s height? It’s impressive that 12,000 people will eventually live and work in it, but other than that, it’s pretty underwhelming.
